A horse for connection and freedom.
The Mangalarga Marchador is a Brazilian horse breed with Iberian roots.
Its balanced build, friendly nature and willingness to work with people make it a versatile partner. Generations of breeding shaped a horse suited to long journeys, farm work and everyday contact with people. In Europe, riders especially value its comfortable gait and openness to different riding styles. Its Iberian ancestry also gives the Marchador an aptitude for dressage and Working Equitation.
The distinctive gait
Marcha: effortless movement.
Alongside walk and canter, the Mangalarga Marchador has its natural Marcha gait. Its even rhythm gives many riders a notably smooth seat, including on longer rides.
Marcha Batida
A Marcha variant with a more diagonal footfall sequence. Rhythm, relaxation and balance are central. On firm ground, it produces a two-beat sound with an echo.Marcha Picada
A variant with a slightly more lateral footfall sequence. An even rhythm and comfortable ride remain essential. On firm ground, it produces a clear four-beat sound with alternating three- and two-leg support.
Versatile by nature
Made for paths worth taking.
Originally bred for long distances and work on Brazilian fazendas, the Marchador now shows its strengths in many settings. It is a valued partner for leisure and trail riding, can be trained in dressage and also has a place in Working Equitation. The individual horse’s abilities, suitable training and fair handling always come first.Origins
A Brazilian story.
The breed’s story began in the 19th century in southern Minas Gerais. Horses of Portuguese and Iberian origin were crossed with horses already present in the region. People needed dependable riding horses that could carry them comfortably over long distances. The name Mangalarga comes from a Brazilian fazenda. Marchador refers to what makes these horses distinctive: their Marcha.
